What You Should Expect When Returning to Physical Therapy During the Coronavirus & COVID-19 Pandemic

Today, I wanted to share with you where we are with our business, with re-opening to in-person visits, with the Coronavirus pandemic and everything that is changing daily and weekly here in Greensboro, North Carolina.

LeBauer Physical Therapy has been open this whole time. We have been seeing our physical therapy patients and health coaching clients using secure online video visits for the last two months.

We made the very difficult decision to stop seeing massage clients and move all of our physical therapy patients to video on Monday, March 23rd. This was three days before Governor Cooper issued the N.C. stay-at-home order.

We are currently in the process of determining the best way to re-open for in-person physical therapy, massage therapy and private yoga. Our goal is to do this in the safest way possible for you, our patients and our staff.

We have developed a list of requirements and guidelines for when we do decide it is safe enough to re-open. I want you to know what you should expect when you decide to go back to physical therapy.

Here is what you should expect when going to see a physical therapist or massage therapist during and after the Coronavirus pandemic!

Coronavirus Physical Therapy Protocol

  • There should be clear guidelines and procedures in place.

For instance, ours will include having both the therapist and patient wear a mask while inside the clinic. We will also screen each employee and patient prior to their visit, wash our hands and sanitize our patient’s hands when they come in.

  • The waiting room should be basically empty.

If the waiting room is not empty, chairs should be at least six feet apart and lines should be clearly marked on the floor. We do not typically have more than one person waiting at a time anyway. We will ask family members or guardians to wait outside or in their car, so this will not be an issue in our clinic!

  • You should be seen by one therapist at a time.

At LeBauer Physical Therapy, this is how we have been working with our patients for over 20 years already! (The larger clinics can sometimes have one therapist for 3-4 patients at the same time!)

  • Rooms should be disinfected between each patient and rotated if possible.

We have 3 separate treatment rooms. We have created a rotation schedule so once we begin to see patients in person, each room will have a minimum of 15 minutes to be cleaned. Right now, we will have 1 hour to clean, disinfect and let the air in the room recirculate.

Secure Online Video Visits

We have had dozens of requests for patients to be seen in person and trust me, we want that too. We value our patient’s ability to be able to come in and be seen in person by us for physical therapy and massage treatments. While this is the case, each and every one of our patients who have been seen using our video visit platform are getting great results!

Our patients using video visits receive the exact same diagnostic exam, full body evaluation, treatment program and recovery plan that we would provide normally. In addition, each of our patients receive the necessary self-treatment tools they need at home to complete their therapy at no additional cost.

We recognize we may have to wait longer until there is a better indication of who can be safely seen in person at our clinic here in Greensboro and who can continue getting great results over video.

As we move forward and re-open to in-person visits, each individual patient’s needs and health concerns will be taken into consideration deciding who needs to be seen in person and who should be treated over video.
